March Madness: Ball Corporation Scores with Aluminum Education for Sports Fans

April 09, 2025

March marked an exciting time for Ball and Kroenke Sports & Entertainment’s (KSE) ongoing partnership with three fan events taking place throughout the month to educate and excite sports fans about recycling and aluminum.

Avalanche Aluminum Adventure

Global Recycling Day kicked off the events with the inaugural ‘Avs Aluminum Adventure,' a series of team-based thrilling challenges around Ball Arena.

Teams of four competed for a chance to win rinkside seats to an Avalanche game by hammering a slapshot, recycling an aluminum bottle to activate the RecyClaw and solving aluminum-themed challenges.

Bernie, the Avalanche’s mascot, encouraged the players throughout the competition and the winners enjoyed a 5-2 Avalanche win against the Detroit Red Wings while sitting against the glass on March 25th.

Trivia Takeover
Ball also partnered with Stoney’s Bar & Grill in March to host a Avalanche Aluminum Trivia Takeover at the restaurant.

Avalanche fans were invited to test their hockey knowledge, capture the moment in a photo-booth, enjoy free sampling from New Belgium, and mingle with Colorado Avalanche Players Charlie Coyle and Parker Kelly who took part in trivia.

Coyle, a “trivia rookie,” said he was looking forward to interacting with the crowd and Kelly noted his light nerves ahead of being quizzed on hockey 101 during the night.

Sustainability and recycling are both important to Coyle and Kelly who emphasized the importance of instilling eco-friendly habits early and often.

Kelly fondly remembered his dad sorting recyclable materials in their family garage, a practice that instilled a 'planet-first mentality' in him from a young age. Similarly, Coyle credited his parents for teaching him about the positive impact of recycling during his upbringing.

Both players are playing in their first season with the Colorado Avalanche and noted how the sustainability focus at Ball Arena stands out with Kelly sharing that “it’s pretty cool to see the fans carrying around aluminum cups and bottles…and what the Arena is doing to promote recycling to help keep the planet healthy.”

Recycle Rally

Finally, Ball and KSE tipped their hats to Earth Month by hosting a Recycle Rally at McGregor Square on March 30th.

The event emphasized the fun and impactful aspects of recycling through activations such as pop-a-shot and inflatables to play basketball- and hockey-themed games.

Hundreds of attendees experienced a full aluminum takeover, free Red Bull samples, a Coors beer special and guest appearances by Denver Nuggets players DeAndre Jordan and PJ Hall.

In a quick chat during the event, Jordan, a champion for sustainability and participant in Ball Corporation’s Green Action League, highlighted the importance of Ball Arena providing fans with an aluminum option during games. “It encourages eco-friendly choices and keeps sustainability top of mind,” he explained.

When asked why sustainability is important to him, Hall summarized it succinctly: “Take care of the planet and it’ll take care of you."

Ball’s partnership with KSE was founded on a shared vision to advance sustainability in sports and entertainment by strengthening in-venue aluminum recycling and recycling education, providing fans with a more environmentally friendly fan experience and showcasing aluminum beverage packaging as the most sustainable choice. The partnership is a demonstration of both companies’ steadfast commitment to a sustainable future and builds on their long history of working together to support the Denver community.

“Working with KSE has shown us that fans embrace sustainability when it’s made simple, engaging and rewarding,” said Mike Kelley, director of strategic partnerships at Ball Corporation. “Interactive programs, clear recycling options and collaboration with KSE have helped us refine our efforts. Most importantly, we’ve learned that sports venues are powerful platforms to inspire collective environmental action.”

Ball Corporation and KSE’s partnership continues to set a standard for sustainability in sports and entertainment, proving that collective action can be inspired through engaging initiatives. Together, they are paving the way for greener practices and empowering fans to make eco-friendly choices.
